1940s

	World War II dominated the 1940s. From 1942 to 1946 most US car companies were focusing on military equipment causing the late 40s wagons to be extensions of the early 40s design. The increasing use of ornate embellishment propelled through this decade to the stylistic explosion of the 1950s.

CAR COMMENT	The early 40s Ford Woodies were popular in the 50s and 60s with the surfers as beach cars.
MODEL COMMENT	Pros: Easy to assemble Cons: Seems wrong to have a metal bodied 'Woody'. Summary: American Muscle is a division of Ertl. This model is basically the same situation as the AMT #30248 CustomShop kit, only the body is metal.

MODEL COMMENT	#30051: Pros: Magnificent level of detail, true to original. Cons: A few pieces (such as the steering wheel) are unnecessarily chrome-plated. The hood has an awkward fit. Summary: I'm very happy to see AMT offer this often-customized model in stock form. For those like myself who like to stay true to the original, this is the kit. #30248: Pros: Pre-painted so this kit makes for easy assembly. Fuel injected flat head engine, custom wheels and a surfboard included. Cons: Lacking in details. Painted wood looks poor. Should come with paint to touch-up the missed spots. Summary: This is a neat little kit for quickly putting together a mild beach-custom. #31641: I don't have this kit, but I have heard it includes the custom parts (even through it has a stock picture on the box. I hope it comes with the stock parts as well.

MODEL COMMENT	This detailed kit includes 153 parts, decals, and chrome trim. Contains parts for '46, '47, or '48. Can be built stock, custom, or commercial delivery. This kit has lots of potential. It could convert to a station wagon by using one of the Ford Woody rears.

CAR COMMENT	1948 was the last year for the classic 40s style Woody. The 1949 Ford had a steel frame and roof, flush fenders and the grill changed giving the car a more 50s style. 1948 also marked the end of the 4-door Ford wagon until it's return in 1952.

CAR COMMENT	A wonderful limousine-like wagon. A popular hearse conversion in its day. Although it has just a sliver of exterior wood it had a lavish mahogany interior. It also sported the magnificent chrome portholes. A truly beautiful car.
