President’s outlook

Well, here I am– back in the saddle again, so to speak. Thanks to Allen Popp for his service in this position for the past two years. Allen will remain on the board as Special Events Director. He will be handling such things as the Thunder Nationals show, and the Hotel events.

So, what does this do to the Land Use thing? Nothing. If you look just to the right of here, you will notice I am still hanging on to that hat as well. As we enter 2004, Environmental Affairs is becoming more important to our ability to enjoy our sport than ever. Our favorite destination, Land Between the Lakes, is going through a public review period as I write this. That doesn’t necessarily man that Turkey Bay will be closed, but what it does mean is that the whole LBL is being evaluated environmentally. What we MUST do to help ensure Turkey Bay’s survival is to follow without question any and all rules set forth by the Forest Service regarding trail usage at the facility. I have time and time again seen “fishing boats” off shore a few hundred yards from TB. These are people just waiting for one of TB’s users to take their rig for a little swim, thereby adding pollutants to Kentucky Lake. First and foremost, you must make sure that you don’t do this! Secondly, if you see someone doing anything like this, if possible, politely tell them why what they are doing is wrong. If they are not the kind to take advice gracefully, report them to the rangers. Period. Environmental groups can come up with enough ammunition on their own to put up a fight; we can’t go on handing bullets to them. Elsewhere in this newsletter is an article written by Del Albright. I advise you to read this at least a couple of times, and really understand the message. If you have any questions about it, please ask me.

So– with a new year comes a few new things for all of us. First, let me explain “why” this newsletter always seems so late. As you all know, the pressures of everyday life can take a toll on secondary projects. This is one of those projects. But, between minor home renovations, working full time+ and owning a Jeep (lots of work there!), I am finally making some time to get this done too. There have been other things going on lately club wise that have taken some extra time. I
