Enviroramble First,
thanks to everyone who showed up for the Adopt a Highway in June. We had
enough people to easily cover the 2 miles in under 3 hours. We collected a
total of approximately 30 bags. That number would have been smaller, but the
state replaced the large bags we were used to with some dinky little things
about the size of which you would use in a kitchen. Second, if
you were unable to make it to LBL at the end of last month, you missed out on
some good riding. It was an informal run this time, as the possibility was
brought up at the end of the May meeting. Several of us did make the trip
though, and it was not without it’s moments.
The first interesting thing to happen was Jimmy getting a little
wobbly in TJ valley. After some rut filling, and a little anti roll help from
Steve’s strap, he was through safely. Danny then proceeded to spank him with
the help of hi new Lock Rite. Wink also aced the obstacle in his XJ. Shortly
after lunch, we were back on the trail again, and I managed to rip the inner
sidewall out of my right rear tire. More of an annoyance than anything, it
was changed and we were back under way in less than 10 minutes. It did
however, end my wheeling, as I had to be able to rely on the remaining 4 to
get us home the next day. Thanks to Groundhawg’s GPS (on borrow), I was able
to find the boundary road easily so we could get back to camp
uneventfully. Speaking of Sunday, it
seems that Steve, Jimmy, and Danny went out on a short ride in the morning,
while the rest of us lazily stuck to camp.
Somewhere, out in the woods, the trio was happily motoring along when they came upon a loose rocky hill.
From what I have heard, Steve went up, and Danny “tried” to follow his line,
which turned out to be a mistake. A
little over halfway up, Danny began to doubt that he would make it, and
decided to back down for a second attempt.
The engine died, which took away the power brakes, and steering, the
result of which was the Jeep careening backwards into a tree. When they got
back to camp, the tailgate was smashed inward several inches. So, after
seeing this “real” carnage, I didn’t feel so bad about my tire incident. Happy
trails! Rat |
