(Continued from page ) trigger. If you are fighting a paper or wood (class
A) type fire, be sure that you are aiming the extinguishing agent at the base
of the flame and use a “sweeping” type motion. If you are fighting a gasoline fire, the
same technique will apply EXCEPT you must be cautious not disturb the layer
of extinguishing agent that is covering the flammable liquid. Just because the flame is gone, does
not mean the possibility of another fire is gone too. With most fires, you must be sure that the
embers or coals are dead. Once the
flames are controlled, be sure to soak them with water, the more the
better. On the other hand, with
flammable liquid fires, be very careful not to disturb the top layer of the
extinguishing agent. If the liquid is
exposed, the possibility of another fire starting is greater. Hopefully, the extinguisher will never
NEED to be used, but as with most things, you never know in advance. Keep the extinguisher handy, but at the
same time secured. Also, make sure
that the extinguisher is in proper working order BEFORE you need to use
it. As a final note, do you have a
fire extinguisher in or near your kitchen ate home? Do you also have one in the garage? Having extinguishers in these two places is
just as important as having one in your vehicle and might save your house,
garage, or even someone‘s life. Daniel “ask me
how I got the name Groundhawg sometime” Weisman Safety Director |
